Why Is Steering Failure So Dangerous?

In South Carolina, steering failure in a motor vehicle or truck can result in serious injuries or fatalities. A steering system that is in danger of failing may show warning signs. In many cases, a manufacturer defect is responsible for the problem. The following sections will explain the different types and causes of steering failure, as well as how an attorney can determine whether a driver or manufacturer was at fault for an accident.

Two Types of Steering Failure

If the steering is about to fail, a vehicle usually gives a warning. There are two types of steering loss awareness. There can be a whining noise coming from the steering column when it is caused by leaks. In these cases, the driver is at least given time to visit a mechanic. Under other circumstances, the leak can be fast, and without warning, the driver finds out that the steering wheel does not move. As a result, the driver may lose control, resulting in a rear-end collision or side-impact crash. The presence of a large truck ahead could result in an underride accident, which is often deadly. So, how can you compensate for steering failure? Since hard braking can cause the vehicle to go out of control, it is recommended to pull the vehicle to a slow stop. Be sure to turn on your vehicle's flashers so that others are aware of your presence.

Other Causes of Steering Failure

There are other mechanical issues that can indicate steering problems and are more subtle. It is worth checking them out, however. A few common ones are:

  • Loose steering: A loose steering rack or worn rod can cause this problem.
  • It is possible for the steering wheel to vibrate when turning as a result of contamination. You can help your system by flushing it.
  • The steering wheel pulls to one side: This can indicate steering failure as a result of wear and tear. There is also the possibility of a fluid leak causing this problem. It could lead to serious head injuries or broken bones if left uncorrected.
  • Grinding noises: Check your steering fluid if you hear grinding noises. It is probably low.
  • Screeching sound: When the wheel is turned a screeching sound is heard: A worn drive belt can cause this.
  • Steering slips: Whether it is a leak, a faulty pump or worn belts, these can be warning signs of a serious problem.
  • Defective steering: Ford recalled 1.4 million vehicles in March 2018 due to the risk of the steering wheel detaching while driving. It has been noted that other recalls have taken place over the years.

Car Accident Injuries

It is possible to suffer serious injuries in an accident involving a motor vehicle. Having an attorney provide you with legal advice and answer all your questions after being injured by a negligent motorist is a good idea. In some cases, steering failure may be the result of another driver's negligence.

A manufacturer's defect might cause your steering wheel to fail. In the event of a crash, an experienced lawyer can assist you in uncovering the cause and holding the responsible parties liable.
